JAMAICAN FOOTBALL SUFFERING FROM TOP DOWN DEVELOPMENT
Following on the success of the 1998 senior national football team, dubbed the REGGAE BOYZ, Jamaica’s national Under 20 and Under 17 teams also achieved success in appearing in FIFA Youth World Cups. Twenty years onward of that great national event (Qualification) there has been a ‘free fall’ of local football from the heights of France to the debacle of the 2014 Mission to Rio.
From 1998 – 2014, Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz have failed to qualify during any of the last 4 World Cup campaigns, failing dismally in the 2014 Mission to Rio, thus demanding a most serious introspection of local football.
METAMORPHOSIS: Upgrading Existing Structures into NEW LEAGUE…BUSINESS and HOTEL PROFESSIONAL LEAGUES
Players at the end of their schoolboy careers face the daunting task of descending from the ‘heights‘ of the most organized and popular competition in the island to the national club league with its deficiencies (e.g. sponsorship, quality of coaching, etc.) all well documented. To date, there has been no serious attempt to secure a football medal at the Olympics.
The current NATIONAL CLUB LEAGUE should be officially ‘promoted’ as an All- Island Semi- professional League...providing a feeder system to BH&H Professional League. Note however, that professional club structures are more viable than a professional league. In this regard, the Business Houses and Hotels may prove to be the key players in the professionalization of local football. Already blessed to an extent with human potential, management skills, marketing, media, venues, etc. these entities could form the super-structure required and the basic infrastructure critically missing in the local football system for sustained professional football in Jamaica.
CROSSING THE ABYSS: Instituting a lottery-style OLYMPIC PLAYER DRAFT of ALL MANNING & ALL DACOSTA PLAYERS… into First Choice BH&H League teams…and into an on-going JAMAICA OLYMPIC DEVELOPMENT TEAM ….with a Jamaican philosophy of play. School boy players who fail to qualify for the OLYMPIC PROGRAM or BH&H League would continue their playing in the National Club league.
Ultimately, the Jamaican Olympic Youth Soccer Philosophy…must include the identification of players of the highest caliber on a continuing and consistent basis, which will lead to increased success for the Jamaican National Teams in the OLYMPIC (international) arena. The Jamaica Football Federation in tandem with the Jamaica Olympic Association must partner and sustain this venture…with one Objective: WINNING AN OLYMPIC FOOTBALL MEDAL (any color)
